Joint Opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa has said that his party will not support any political party that intends to form an alliance to govern the Hambanthota Municipal Council which was won by the United National Party in the recently concluded local government polls.

MP Rajapaksa made the observation, when commenting on former Urban Councillor Eraj Fernando’s statement yesterday, where he said that the United People’s Freedom Alliance intends to form an alliance with the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna in order to obtain a majority to govern the said Municipal council.

The UNP won 9 seats, while the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna won 7 seats and the United People’s Freedom Alliance won 4 seats.

However, the UNP failed to secure a majority to govern the Hambanthota Municipal Council.

MP Namal Rajapaksa therefore said that only an individual who had been nominated by party members and won the elections can be appointed to the council, adding that such an individual will be selected from the winning party, which the Sri lanka Podu Jana Peramuna.
